Prayer for Healing
Summary
Prayer 1: For Physical Healing
When to Pray This Prayer
Something is broken — your body, your heart, your mind, or your spirit — and you need the God who heals. Maybe you've received a diagnosis. Maybe you're carrying emotional wounds that haven't closed. Maybe you're praying for someone you love who is hurting. You need the Great Physician.
Prayer 1: For Physical Healing
Lord, my body is struggling and I bring it to you because you are the one who formed it. You knit together every cell, every nerve, every organ. You know what's wrong even better than the doctors do. I'm asking you to heal me. Touch the place that's broken. Restore what disease, injury, or age has damaged. I believe you can heal instantly, and I also trust you if healing comes slowly through medicine, rest, and treatment. However you choose to work, I'm grateful. But I'm asking boldly because your Word says to come boldly to the throne of grace. Heal my body, Lord. And while you work, heal my fear about what might happen. Hold me in both my pain and my hope. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Jeremiah 17:14 — "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise."
Prayer 2: For Emotional Healing
Father, the wounds inside me are invisible but they're real. Rejection, betrayal, abandonment, abuse, loss — these experiences have left scars that still hurt when pressed. I've tried to move on, to be strong, to "get over it," but some wounds don't heal just because time passes. They need your direct touch. Go back to the places in my story where I was broken and bring your healing presence there. Mend what was torn. Restore what was stolen. Replace the lies I believed about myself with your truth. I know this kind of healing takes time and sometimes requires help from counselors and trusted friends. Lead me to the right support. But I also know that the deepest healing comes from you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Psalm 147:3 — "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
Prayer 3: For Someone I Love
God, someone I love is hurting and I feel helpless. I can't fix them. I can't take their pain. I can't make the diagnosis disappear or the depression lift or the injury heal. But I can bring them to you, and that's what I'm doing right now. I'm carrying them before your throne the way the friends of the paralytic lowered him through the roof to reach Jesus. Look at them with compassion. Touch them with your healing hand. Give their doctors wisdom. Surround them with people who will care for them well. And give me the grace to be present in their suffering without trying to fix what only you can fix. Heal them, Father. Please. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: James 5:16 — "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."
Prayer 4: For Spiritual Healing
Jesus, my soul feels dry and distant from you. The passion I once had for prayer, for worship, for your Word has faded. I go through the motions but the fire is gone. Something in my spiritual life needs healing — maybe it's disappointment with you, maybe it's unconfessed sin, maybe it's burnout from trying too hard. Whatever caused this spiritual numbness, heal it. Revive what has withered. Reignite what has gone cold. Bring me back to the place where I loved being with you, where your presence was my greatest joy. I don't want to settle for spiritual survival. I want spiritual health — vibrant, honest, life-giving connection with you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Psalm 51:10 — "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
How to Make This Prayer a Daily Practice
- Pray specifically about your area of needed healing every morning. Name it. Don't generalize.
- Anoint yourself or ask your church elders to anoint you with oil and pray over you, as James 5 instructs.
- Keep a healing journal. Record what you're praying for, any progress you notice, and how God meets you in the process.
- If you're praying for someone else, let them know. Few things are more comforting than hearing "I prayed for you today."
Frequently Asked Questions
Does God always heal? God can heal anything, but he doesn't always heal in the way or timing we expect. Paul asked God three times to remove his thorn in the flesh, and God said his grace was sufficient instead. Healing may come fully, partially, gradually, or in eternity. Trust God's wisdom in every outcome.
Is it okay to pray for healing and also use medicine? Absolutely. Luke, a physician, was one of Jesus' closest companions. God works through medical science, skilled doctors, and modern treatments. Using medicine alongside prayer is not a lack of faith — it's wisdom.
What if I've been praying for healing and nothing has changed? Keep praying. Don't let unanswered prayer silence your voice. But also explore other avenues God may be using: medical treatment, counseling, lifestyle changes, community support. And know that "nothing has changed" isn't always accurate — sometimes healing is happening beneath the surface where you can't see it yet.
How do I pray for healing without being demanding toward God? Pray boldly but humbly. "Lord, I'm asking you to heal this" is bold. "But I trust your wisdom and your plan" is humble. Hold both. Jesus himself prayed "if it is possible, take this cup from me" — bold request — "yet not my will, but yours be done" — humble surrender.
