Prayer for Fear
Summary
Prayer 1: When Fear Is Overwhelming
When to Pray This Prayer
Fear has you frozen. Maybe it's fear of the future, fear of failure, fear of loss, or fear you can't even name. It sits in your chest and whispers that everything will go wrong. You need to hear a different voice — the voice of the God who says "fear not" more than three hundred times in his Word.
Prayer 1: When Fear Is Overwhelming
Lord, I'm afraid. I wish I could say something more spiritual, but that's the raw truth — I am scared. The fear is big and my faith feels small right now. I know your Word says "do not fear" over and over, and I believe that's not a command to pretend I'm not afraid but an invitation to bring my fear to you. So here it is. I'm afraid of what might happen. I'm afraid of what I can't control. I'm afraid that the worst-case scenario in my head might actually come true. Hold me in this fear. Don't let me face it alone. Remind me of every time you showed up when things looked impossible — for Abraham, for Moses, for David, for Mary. You met them in their fear and you'll meet me in mine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Isaiah 41:10 — "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Prayer 2: For Courage to Move Forward
Father, fear has been keeping me stuck. I know what I need to do — the conversation I need to have, the step I need to take, the change I need to make — but fear has built a wall between me and forward motion. I've been waiting to feel brave before I act, but maybe courage isn't the absence of fear. Maybe it's moving forward while the fear is still there. Give me that kind of courage. The kind that takes one shaky step and trusts that you'll catch me if I fall. I don't need to see the whole path. I just need the guts to take the next step. Walk with me into the thing I'm afraid of. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Joshua 1:9 — "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Prayer 3: For Freedom from the Spirit of Fear
God, I've lived with fear for so long that it feels like part of my personality. But your Word says you did not give me a spirit of fear. That means this constant dread is not from you and it's not who I am. I'm asking you to uproot it. Pull out the deep roots of fear that have wrapped around my identity. Replace them with power, love, and a sound mind. I don't want to make decisions based on what I'm afraid of anymore. I want to make decisions based on what you've called me to. Set me free from the prison of "what if" and release me into the wide-open space of "what is" — and what is true is that you are with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
Prayer 4: Surrendering My Fears by Name
Jesus, I want to name my fears out loud before you because unnamed fears have more power than named ones. I'm afraid of [name your specific fear]. I've carried it silently and it's been growing in the dark. But right now I drag it into the light of your presence. You already knew it was there. You've watched me carry it and you've been waiting for me to hand it over. I give it to you. Not because I suddenly feel unafraid, but because I'm choosing to trust that you are bigger. Hold this fear for me. I wasn't built to carry it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture to hold onto: Psalm 34:4 — "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears."
How to Make This Prayer a Daily Practice
- Name one specific fear each morning and consciously surrender it to God before your day begins.
- When fear spikes, whisper Isaiah 41:10 to yourself: "Do not fear, for I am with you."
- Keep a "fear inventory" journal. Write down your fears and revisit them monthly. You'll be surprised how many never materialized.
- Share your fears with a trusted friend or mentor. Fear loses power when spoken aloud in safe community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is fear always sinful? No. Fear is a God-given protective emotion. Healthy fear keeps you from walking off cliffs and touching hot stoves. The problem comes when fear becomes chronic, irrational, or controlling — when it stops you from obeying God or living the life he's called you to.
Why does God tell us not to fear if he knows fear is a natural human emotion? "Do not fear" in Scripture is less a command and more a comfort. It's God saying, "You don't have to be afraid because I'm here." He's not scolding you for feeling afraid. He's offering his presence as the antidote.
How do I help my children deal with fear? Validate their feelings — don't dismiss their fears as silly. Pray with them specifically about what scares them. Teach them short Scripture verses they can say when afraid. And model honest faith by letting them see you bring your own fears to God.
What if my fear feels bigger than my faith? That's okay. Faith the size of a mustard seed moves mountains. You don't need big faith — you need a big God, and you already have one. Come to him with whatever shred of faith you have and let him work with it.
